I Survived My First Coterie

Updated: Jan 9, 2019

Hey Loves,

I know I've been MIA for a while, but for good reason! I've been making moves and getting back on track with my life. Towards the end of last year I was recommended for and chosen to be an intern for Susan Bonomo & Co. -- a New York City based fashion showroom. And what exactly would I be doing in NYC? Coterie 2017!

Coterie is a HUGE fashion trade show which takes place twice a year at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan, New York. The three day event took place from February 27th to March 1st -- and for good reason because there was so much to see.

A fashion trade show, for those of you who may be unfamiliar, is basically the first step in the business to consumer (B2C) cycle. It is a large exhibition of small businesses showcasing their lines while offering larger stores and companies to take their products to sell to us, the consumers, at wholesale.

I was given the opportunity to work with designer Galina Sobolev. Her line, "Single", is designed and geared for the contemporary women somewhere in her late 20s and mid 40s, that isn't afraid of a pop of color or a fresh bold piece. But don't let that stop you. Galina herself told a customer that her 90 year old mom sports her bombers too! I also, on the first day, was drawn to a beautifully striking cobalt blue bomber (photo at bottom of page). I need it in my closet!

One of Galina's featured piece's can be seen hanging in her photo (left) -- the sheer embroidered, "Gucci inspired" top. #Throwback to my mood board post where I predicted the embroidery trend making a comeback!

Anyone who knows me personally knows I just had to sneak away and explore for a bit (of course when the crowds died down *wink wink*). Within the area that Coterie took place, there were over 8 thousand brand booths to visit; and I think I only managed to see around a hundred, which should put it into perspective a little bit.

What sets Coterie apart are the different levels that they bring to you. There were seminars, interviews, and exhibitions geared towards different demographics. One of the areas that I stumbled upon was the technology exhibition. You know those headsets that a few of your friends might have, that are smartphone compatible and can take you (figuratively) to a dessert or to outer space? That's virtual reality (VR) technology.

Upon entering, you're given an iPad and they tell you to hold it up toward a specific brands frame. Next thing you know, on your screen you are being shown lookbooks, videos, social media pages, etc. I have included a video below where one brand decided to have a viewing on their actual store through the VR technology.

The next video is of a dress with particular images and movements being projected on it. I thought it was interesting and I can defiantly see the over-the-top runway shows that Moschino puts on, incorporating this technology.

All in all, the experience was great, made lots of new connections, and met some pretty dope people. Special thanks to Galina Sobolev, Angela Diaz, and Susan Bonomo of Susan Bonomo & Co.! Can't wait for the next show!
