Designer Evolution: LaQuan Smith

LaQuan Smith. Self-made designer, innovator and hustler. Born and raised in Queens, New York, a young LaQuan made a name of himself in one of the biggest fashion capitals. Not letting fashion school rejections stop him, he worked until he made his New York Fashion Week debut at 21 years old!


Famously gifted with his very own sewing machine by his grandmother at 13 years old, LaQuan has put his all into his creations to ensure a legacy for himself and so that his story of New York can be told.



Finding inspiration through nightlife, traveling, sex, and music, his designs truly bring these ideas to life. In the early stages of his come-up, LaQuan has said he would spot muses in the streets or at the club and give them his custom designs to wear for the night. This became a wild success as his name was now buzzing in the fashion scene.


LaQuan specializes in creating the "It-Girl" look. Creating for and dressing the hottest names from Beyoncé and Rihanna to Cardi B and the Kardashians. His newest muses -- The Clermont Twins, part of the new wave of pop culture it-girls definitely exude the vibe of the brand.

LaQuan's major influence in his life which pours into his creations is to escape the box that being an 'urban' fashion brand puts him in in the fashion world, simply because he's black. He vows to turn his luxury brand into the likes of Gucci and and other couture lines.


While analyzing the brands first official collection in 2016, compared to his most recent collections, we can definitely see the growth of the designer and what risks he was willing to take in the name of fashion and recognition.

In terms of how his signature look has evolved, he is still clearly pushing levels and boundaries, and doing it well. We can also appreciate his eye for acknowledging current trends, as we see motifs of the color spectrum/gradient trend in his S/S19 collection.
